    About the Author:
    A native of Virginia, CAPT Steven W. Knott, USN (Ret.), is a lifelong student of the American Civil War. Following his graduation from Hampden-Sydney College in 1982 and initial career as a high school history teacher, he entered military service in 1984. Earning is aviator’s wings in 1986, Captain Knott served 28 years in the U.S. Navy prior to his retirement in 2012. His numerous deployments include duty in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Gulf, and Somalia. As the commanding officer of a helicopter squadron based in Norfolk, Virginia, his unit received recognition during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In his final assignment, Captain Knott served as an instructor at the U.S. Army War College where he taught leadership, strategy formulation, and history to senior military officers and civilian executives from government. He has conducted well over 200 leadership and historical seminars at Gettysburg, Antietam, and Civil War sites in Virginia. Captain Knott currently serves as the U.S. Army War College Advancement Officer and he conducts strategic leadership educational programs at Civil War and World War II battlefields for governmental and corporate organizations.
