Born in Ohio, James Williams moved to Augusta, Georgia, in 1857, at the age of twenty-one. There he married a local girl. Eliza Jane Rennison. From his enlistment in October 1861 to the bitter final days of the war, Williams wrote regularly to his wife--a correspondence that chronicled his rise from private soldier to a field of command as a lietenant colonel, his service at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, and his long tenure with the Mobile garrison. Enlivened with a sense of humor, a skillful and pleasant writing style, and dotted with numerous "primitive" sketches to illustrate the topic, Williams's letters are not only a useful account of the Mobile theater, but also a first-person guide to the rigors of camp life and concerns of men in the field.

SHIPPING TIME
I try to ship no later than the next business day after payment. Due to volume, however, I have a noon cut-off, so, if your payment is received after 12:00 noon, it will not be mailed until at least the next business day. Saturdays and Sundays are not business days. Occasionally, I am out of town on Fridays or Mondays. Packages that will be traveling by FedEx Ground or UPS may take an extra day to get shipped as I am not close to their drop-off locations.
