A fascinating book about the War’s effect on the people, culture, attitude and daily activities of Richmond during the 1960s. A great read and highly recommended. Great condition: clean, tight, bright, no signs of prior ownership. A great addition to your collection.
ASHES OF GLORY: SUMMARY AND REVIEW
Furgurson is an exceptional writer and storyteller. He paints a lively portrait of the Confederacy's first city in wartime.
It's the view of the war from the streets of Richmond.
This richly detailed, absorbing book brings to life the years in which Richmond was the symbol of Southern independence and the theater for a drama as splendid, sordid, and tragic as the war itself.
Furguson writes about what life was like for citizens, spies, and prisoners of the embattled city of Richmond during the Civil War. The book captures the emotions and experiences of the Richmond population throughout the war's five-year ordeal.
Drawing on an array of archival sources
and first-person published accounts, ‘Ashes of Glory’ portrays Richmond's passion through the voices of soldiers and statesmen, preachers and prostitutes, slaves and slavers. Furguson does an excellent job of giving civil war era Richmond rhythm and life.
Details of life in the city are presented: the newspapers, the hospitals, the spies, and many other social topics.
This book does a good job of looking at Richmond as the war progressed, from its selection as the CSA's capital to its burning after the withdrawal of Lee's army.
The book starts off in 1859 describing pre-war Richmond and the sentiment in the city. Furguson does a great job of using newspapers, diaries, and letters to convey how ordinary citizens felt during the war.
The author does an excellent job portraying the economic, political, and military situation of wartime Richmond from many different perspectives.
Telling the story of the Confederacy's capital, from July of 1861 to the end of the Civil War, Ashes of Glory portrays not only such luminaries as Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee but also the rank and file of Richmond: the preachers, merchants, matrons, nurses, newspapermen, POWs, prostitutes, bootleggers, and spies, who kept the city bustling even when its destiny seemed most grim.

In the early years of the war, the citizenry of Richmond exhibited enthusiasm for the Confederate cause.
Richmond was the symbol of Southern independence but with each passing month, it became more apparent that, no matter what the war's outcome, things would never be as they had been.
Before the Civil War, Richmond, Va., the state capital, was a prosperous city; during the war, it served as the South's administrative capital, military headquarters, and principal industrial center. As a result, Richmond was under almost constant threat from Federal armies. After Grant launched his 1864 campaign to subdue the Southern capital, the city developed a siege mentality that ultimately sapped the will of its people.
The Industrial hub of an agrarian society, Richmond attracted the Confederacy's ‘new men’ (and women): profiteers, madams, refugees. Furgurson is particularly successful in presenting the erosion of conventional standards and the increasing randomness of everyday life for everyone from congressmen to prostitutes.
We meet not only with such luminaries as Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson but with a strikingly broad spectrum of the community: preachers, nurses, newspapermen, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs, slaves, slave dealers, bootleggers, actors, spies, prostitutes, prisoners of war, refugees, eager debutantes, Union loyalists; brothel madames; aristocrats-turned-hospital-care-givers and swarms of enlisted men and officers from all over the South. The stories of loyalists, unionists, and shady characters is fascinating.
This book is an interesting tale of people coping with an impossible situation. Despite universal hardship, Richmond still crackled with spirit, at least until the end came.
A passionate and compelling work of social history.
