Collector Bookstore Quick Notes:
Please note this is an oversize "coffee table" sized volume, 11.75 in. x 16 in., 544 pages, weighing 12 lbs! The book consists primarily of large format engravings that originally appeared in newspapers between 1861-1865. Some engravings are full page; others have 2 engravings per page. Each engraving has a caption beneath it which would have appeared in the newspaper, and below that is a detailed explanation of the scene.
This is quite an extraordinary volume, I'm not sure the term "book" adequately describes it! For students of the civil war, this is likely to be a treasure trove of information, especially given that the engravings are sufficiently detailed as to show the expressions and facial features of the soldiers, officers and other conflict participants.
Publishers Full Description:
This oversized facsimile edition of Frank Leslie's nineteenth century Civil War history is richly illustrated with 740 period engravings. The subjects illustrated include portraits of political and military leaders, famous forts, pivotal battles and naval engagements, military encampments, and major events arranged chronologically to follow the course of the war. These images were created by a corps of war artists employed by Frank Leslie for his illustrated newspapers. Years later these prints from 1861 to 1865 were recovered and assembled in this volume. Along with the fascinating illustrations and concise history is a range of official data taken from the nation's war records, including the numbers for troops who entered the Union army by state, the war's principle battles, their generals, and numbers killed and wounded. Indexes to Civil War history and this book's illustrations are included. This book is a historical treasure for all who are fascinated with the Civil War.
