ABRAHAM LINCOLN: THE PRAIRIE YEARS
is a two-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln’s early life published in 1926. Sandburg, like Lincoln, was from the Illinois prairie and held a lifelong fascination with Lincoln.
Volume I (480 pages) covers Abraham Lincoln’s life through the mid-1850’s – after his service as an Illinois Congressman. Volume II (482 pages including Index) covers his life through his election as president in early 1861. Each volume contains “105 illustrations from photographs, and many cartoons, sketches, maps, and letters.”
ABRAHAM LINCOLN: THE WAR YEARS
. After publishing THE PRAIRIE YEARS, Sandburg began a tremendous effort to complete his study of Abraham Lincoln. In 1939, he published the four-volume series “ABRAHAM LINCOLN; THE WAR YEARS. In these writings, the stories of Lincoln and the people of there are told. In 1940, this 4-volume series earned Sandburg the Pulitzer Prize in history, making him the only person to receive Pulitzers in both poetry and history.

Volume I, II, & IV “WITH 426 HALF-TONES OF PHOGRAPHS, AND 244 CUTS OF CARTOONS, LETTERS, DOCUMENTS”. VOLUME III has 414 half-tones and 249 cuts of same as above.
All books in 4-volume series have a 1939 copyright date by Harcourt, Brace and Company, Inc. which makes them First Editions

CONDITION:
These books, in my opinion, are in excellent condition. The spines on all books are tight – as a matter of fact, many volumes can’t be opened all the way – they have obviously never been read or opened all the way. There is no writing or inscriptions on the books. The pages are light and bright with no evidence of foxing. There is some expected age yellowing on some of the end pages and inside of boards of some volumes.
Volume I of THE PRAIRIE YEARS – there is a 4 ¼” tear on the page opposite the front hardcover board. Volume. III of THE WAR YEARS has a split when you open the front cover that is approx. 2 ¾” (see picture). This split does not impact the tightness of the spine. Volume IV has a detached frontispiece of a photo of Lincoln – the picture is there – just not attached.
Some of the books may have minor bent corners and some fraying on corners and/or spine.
This would make a FABULOUS addition to any Lincoln or historical collection!!
